Typhon 42355

Asteroid Typhon, astrological meaningTyphon was a child of Gaia, Mother Earth, a huge winged monster with the head of a human and snake coils below, the bane of mankind, who belched fire, caused huge storms and massive destruction.

By Echidna, another human/snake hybrid, he was the father of numerous monsters, including Cerberus, the three-headed dog that guards the entrance to the underworld; the Chimera, a fire-breathing lion/goat/snake hybrid; and the Lemaean Hydra, eventually killed by Heracles in his labors.

After the overthrow of his half-siblings, the Titans, Typhon challenged Zeus for the rulership of the cosmos. Typhon is killed by a thunderbolt after an epic battle, and is buried under Mount Etna in Sicily, from where he still causes volcanic eruptions. Typhon is the root of our word “typhoon”, a violent storm. The name Typhon was given to a TNO (Trans-Neptunian Object) in the Kuiper Belt region of the solar system, near Pluto.

Astrologically, Typhon represents storms and earthquakes, volcanic activity, and any disastrous event which threatens to overwhelm, physically or psychologically. Metaphorically, it can indicate being beset by troubles.
