AAA Profile: Amy Klobuchar

On Sunday February 10th 2019, in the midst of a blinding snowstorm, Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar announced her candidacy for the 2020 Democratic nomination for President of the United States. The open-air Minneapolis venue quickly had Klobuchar looking something like the Adorable Snowwoman of the North, but lent force to her argument that she has “grit.” Americans are famous for making 180 degree turns in their successive presidents. Having gone from the first black president in 2008 to an apparent racist in 2016, they may be willing to make a change from the harsh, bullying misogynist Trump to a female “Minnesota Nice” candidate.

A native Minnesotan, daughter of a teacher and a sportswriter, Amy Klobuchar is a graduate of Yale and the University of Chicago Law School, with more than a decade in private practice as a corporate lawyer before moving into public service in 1998, when she was elected Hennepin County Attorney. Reelected in 2002 with no opposition, in 2005 Klobuchar ran for the Senate seat vacated by Mark Dayton, gained the Democratic nomination and won the 2006 general election. She has been a strong progressive voice in Congress ever since.

Born 25 May 1960 (no time available), Amy Klobuchar has one of the more promising birth charts I have reviewed for the 2020 presidential sweepstakes, and if the timing for her rollout announcement (snowstorm notwithstanding) is any indication, she could well find herself as America’s 46th President.

My Approved Portraits

With Sun squared Pluto, Amy Klobuchar’s claim to have “grit” is astrologically supported; with the Sun also squared Chiron, she could be a healing influence to bring the country together

Klobuchar’s self-defining statement at her announcement: “I have grit” is amply portrayed within a solar Grand Cross, with the Sun at 4 Gemini closely squared Pluto at 3 Virgo. Tough and steely, with a “never say die” attitude, Sun/Pluto natives can dish it out, but they can also take it. This forward-looking square is balanced by a backward-looking one, to natal Chiron at 2 Pisces, establishing Klobuchar as a potential healing influence, but also willing to color outside the lines when the occasion calls for it. Noted as one of the more bipartisan members of the Senate, willing to reach across the aisle for compromise, Klobuchar has introduced legislation crafted with GOP Senators Blunt, Grassley and Kennedy in just the past few months, in areas as diverse as workplace harassment, online privacy, and pharmaceutical costs.

Klobuchar head-to-head with fellow Senator and nomination rival Kamala Harris; are they discussing whose name should appear at the top of the ticket?

But what Klobuchar has, even more than grit, is authenticity. The T-Square above becomes transformed into a Grand Cross with the addition of two asteroids, Veritas (Latin for “truth”), conjunct the Sun from 6 Gemini, and asteroid Truth itself, opposed the Sun from 7 Sagittarius. This gives Klobuchar a “comfortable in her skin” feel to others, someone who can be trusted to express herself honestly and with integrity. Ironically, Donald Trump has these same points emphasized, with Truth conjunct his Ascendant and Veritas conjoined his personal celestial referent, asteroid Troemper. Although truthfulness is not in his nature, he can appear authentic to others (Truth/Ascendant), and that inner core of self-certitude conveyed by Troemper/Veritas allows him to convince himself of the rectitude of his assertions. With both truth-tellers connected to the Sun, Klobuchar’s authenticity is genuine; their connections with Mercury at 14 Gemini ensure that she expresses this truthfulness forthrightly.

Asteroid Amy at 4 Taurus suggests determination, perhaps even stubbornness, but the Mutable Sun allows for plenty of flexibility. With asteroid Amy opposed Neptune at 7 Scorpio, Klobuchar is a visionary, and the opposition to asteroid Victoria at 3 Scorpio, named for the Roman goddess of victory, makes her a winner.

kl MN Nice

Can Klobuchar’s brand of “Minnesota Nice” trump The Donald’s “New York Nasty”?

Two exact conjunctions tell much of her life story thus far, and also argue for her further elevation. Saturn, ruing career, is exactly conjunct asteroid Vesta, symbol of the public servant, at 17 Capricorn, indicating her natural bent toward work in the service of others. These are exactly inconjunct Uranus at 17 Leo, reflecting her progressive stance. With Uranus conjoined asteroid Senator at 20 Leo, we see the major setting for that service.

But Capitol Hill may not be the limit of her reach, as the second exact conjunction foretells. Klobuchar sports an exact pairing of Jupiter with asteroid Whitehouse at 1 Capricorn, perhaps enhancing and augmenting her run for the presidency. Jupiter is known as “the Greater Benefic” for the good things it brings in its wake, and is also closely connected to politics generally, while Whitehouse of course represents the Oval Office and the presidency itself. These form a Yod, or Finger of Destiny, with Neptune/Victoria, and the Sun at its Apex. If Klobuchar can harness Jupiter’s expansiveness and luck, and Neptune’s vision and compassion, her march to the White House could become a cakewalk.

kl kavanaugh

Klobuchar’s mettle and self-control were on full display during Brett Kavanaugh’s SCOTUS confirmation hearings, when he riposted to her questions about whether he had a history of blackout drinking with a surly, “Have you?” Klobuchar’s father was an alcoholic, but she didn’t bat an eye while putting Kavanaugh firmly back in his place.

Victoria itself conjoins Washingtonia at 28 Libra, perhaps defining the venue for her victory, something Washingtonia doubles down on by its square to asteroid Nike, Victoria’s Greek counterpart, at 27 Cancer. No doubt that DC is a winning town for Klobuchar, but there is a caveat in the presence of asteroid Nemesis in the mix, from 28 Cancer. Nemesis refers to undoing or ruin, but it’s a two-edged sword, and can refer to one’s own downfall, or performing that adversarial role for others, in this case, possibly the Washington establishment. Nemesis is also exactly sextile natal asteroid Troemper at 28 Virgo (as well as conjoined his natal Saturn – career), perhaps refining Klobuchar’s field of retributive action still further.

A pairing of asteroid America at 16 Cancer with centaur Asbolus at 19 Cancer suggests an ability to capture the mood of the country. Asbolus was a seer who read the future in the flight patterns of birds, and represents having one’s finger on the pulse of what’s to come, an ability to tap into the zeitgeist (literally, “the spirit of the times”). This is obviously an invaluable skill to have when leading the nation, and opposed that Saturn/Vesta, it suggests a “keeper of the flame” vibe to a possible Klobuchar administration.

kl crowd

Klobuchar addresses a frozen but enthusiastic crowd at her official campaign rollout, held amidst a Minnesotan snowstorm.

The timing of Klobuchar’s snowbound campaign rollout is eerily apt, precisely connected to her purpose. The Angles are the fastest-moving points of the chart, changing degrees roughly every four minutes, so when we see close connections there, it means something. When Klobuchar uttered the fateful words, “I stand before you as the granddaughter of an iron ore miner, as the daughter of a teacher and a newspaperman, as the first woman elected to the United States Senate from the state of Minnesota, to announce my candidacy for president of the United States,” at 2:26 PM CST in Minneapolis on February 10th, the Ascendant at 16 Cancer was exactly conjunct her natal asteroid America. It is also exactly conjunct Donald Trump’s natal Nemesis.

Moreover, the transiting IC, the foundation of the matter, at 23 Virgo was exactly conjunct transit asteroid America, reinforcing the emphasis on the country at large, both in her birth chart and in the moment at hand. Transit Saturn at 16 Capricorn is exactly on the Descendant, exactly opposed Klobuchar’s natal America, identifying her as a potential Chief Executive of the nation.

The transit Sun at 21 Aquarius conjoins asteroid Snowdonia, a nod to the inclement weather, and widely opposes transit asteroid Amy at 29 Leo, which is more closely squared by transit asteroid Victoria at 26 Taurus. Forming a Grand Cross is transit asteroid Kassandra at 27 Scorpio, representing credibility, and just about to conjoin Klobuchar’s natal asteroid Karma at 28 Scorpio, suggesting a fated or predestined moment. Kassandra is also exactly conjunct Klobuchar’s natal Venus, boosting her popularity, especially among women, and concentrating on her “Minnesota Nice” values. Natal Kassandra at 16 Taurus is exactly sextile natal America and the announcement Ascendant, affording more opportunity for Americans to focus on Klobuchar’s sincerity and trustworthiness.

After her speech, Klobuchar added a knit cap as a concession to the inclement weather, while she worked the crowd

An exact conjunction of the Moon and Mars at 27 Aries with Uranus at 29 shows Klobuchar as a female (Moon) champion (Mars) for the progressive (Uranus) cause. Moon/Mars is exactly square natal Nike at 27 Cancer, and all three oppose natal Washingtonia at 28 Libra. Transit Washingtonia at 15 Aries squares the Horizontal Axis and transit Saturn, as well as natal America.

The ongoing, year-long conjunction of transit asteroids Whitehouse and Senator at 12 and 14 Taurus shows Klobuchar’s current position and the one she seeks; conjoined natal Kassandra, it’s her credibility that sets her apart from the seemingly countless competitors from the Senate. With transit asteroid Truth at 12 Sagittarius newly returned to its natal degree, Klobuchar is just beginning a new cycle of authenticity and genuineness; closely opposed natal Mercury, she’s easily able to express that to others.

Until we view the entire 2020 Democratic field for president (which admittedly may take a wide angle lens), it’s impossible to handicap the race properly, but Amy Klobuchar looks like quickly becoming a frontrunner.
