Oscar Nominees 2019

When the curtain rings up on the 91st annual Academy Awards in Los Angles on February 24th, there may not be an official host below, but the celestial stage above will be crammed with asteroids representing the nominees, ready and waiting to collect Oscar gold for their performances. A disproportionately large number of Best Picture contenders have good PNA (Personal-Named Asteroids) matches, and a galaxy of mini-stars well reflects their human counterparts vying for Best Actress and Best Actor, lead and supporting.

Let’s start with the Best Picture category first. Normally, this is a huge dud from an asteroid perspective. Shocking, I know, but there are no asteroids named Shape, Water, Dunkirk, Phantom, Thread, Get, Out, Lady or Bird, to name just a few of the proper nouns in last year’s nominees.

But this year? Oh, baby! We have asteroids Black and Panthera for “Black Panther” (with Black doing double duty for BlacKkKlansman”, perhaps splitting that cosmic vote?); Bohemia for “Bohemian Rhapsody”; Starr and Born for “A Star Is Born”; Green for “Green Book” and Roma for, well, “Roma.” Only “The Favourite” and “Vice” have no conceivable asteroid place marker.

O91 black panther

Nobody denies that politics plays a role in picking Oscar winners; with an apparent racist in the White House, could this boost the chances for a black superhero flick?

With the spotlighting 6 Pisces Sun conjoined Black at 3 Pisces and Panthera at 14 Pisces still within solar orb and closely conjunct film-ruling Neptune at 15 Pisces, “Black Panther” looks like a lock for the top honors, celestially speaking. Black here could also indicate “BlacKkKlansman” as a Dark Horse candidate (no pun intended).

O91 blackkklansman

BlacKKKlansman could steal some of asteroid Black’s thunder and edge past “Black Panther” in a surprise win

But not so fast! Starr at 22 Gemini opposes beneficent Jupiter at 21 Sagittarius and asteroid Academia (for the Academy) at 23, while Born at 14 Aries squares Saturn at 17 Capricorn, often a symbol of professional accolades and awards, making “A Star Is Born” a strong contender. Green at 18 Aries shares Saturn’s spotlight with Born, and also squares transformational, empowering Pluto at 22 Capricorn, widely squared Venus at 24 Cap, perhaps giving “Green Book” a popular edge.

O91 bale

With asteroids Christian and Baily conjunct and in the hot zone between the Sun and Neptune, will Christian Bale take home the Best Actor award, or is too politically incorrect to honor a portrayal of Dick Cheney?

Asteroid Roma at 5 Aquarius squares Nike, named for the Greek goddess of victory, at 10 Taurus, as well as engaged in an out-of-Sign square with Uranus at 29 Aries. Could “Roma” be an upset win? Regardless of its Best Picture prospects, “Roma” looks well-placed to take some nods for its performances, with asteroid Actor conjoined Roma from 8 Aquarius, also squaring Nike. That spells “victory for ‘Roma’ actors” in pretty clear astrologic terms.

O91 star born

This twenty-third remake of “A Star Is Born” has some celestial staying power, with asteroids Starr and Born in prominent placement

Lastly, asteroid Bohemia at 3 Capricorn us sextile the Sun and semisquare the 20 Scorpio Moon, perhaps boosting “Bohemian Rhapsody”’s public support, but its real power lies in the moment. When the ceremony begins at 8 PM PST, Bohemia will be closely conjoined the 5 Capricorn IC and squared the 5 Libra Ascendant, making it a highly resonant factor in the evening.

O91 yalitza-aparicio

Exact PNA matches are always a highlighting thing – with asteroid Aparicio conjunct Neptune and Mercury, will “Roma” star Yalitza Aparicio take home the Best Actress Oscar?

On the surface it looks like “Black Panther” has the best hand, but Neptune can be tricky. It could easily manifest as a huge disappointment, based in unrealistic expectations. Several actors are in that same boat: Asteroids Christian and Baily at 10 and 9 Pisces populate the zone between Sun and Neptune, indicating Christian Bale may have the inside track for Best Actor as VP Dick Cheney in “Vice.” The Sun/Neptune balance highlights Bale’s cinematic performance, but Oscar may slip between those slick Neptune fingers.

O91 green book

Asteroid Green in square to powerhouse Pluto and success-driven Saturn could pull off a win for “Green Book”

On the hinter side of Neptune but also approaching Mercury at 24 Pisces, which rules the voting process, are asteroids Aparicio and Elliott, at 16 and 19 Pisces. As exact PNA surname matches for Best Actress nominee Yalitza Aparicio (“Roma”) and Best Supporting Actor Sam Elliott (“A Star Is Born”), they strongly convey their terrestrial counterparts’ potential for victory. Jupiter at 21 Sagittarius squares both, suggesting an increase in status, prestige or reputation, and the Moon in trine from 20 Scorpio could suggest public support for their candidacies.

O91 amy adams

A startling number of nominees have not one, but two exact asteroid matches for their names; “Vice”‘s Amy Adams, with Amy trine Jupiter and Adams squared Saturn, could have the edge in the Best Supporting Actress category

Asteroid Samuele at 28 Aries with Uranus at 29 could indicate an upset win for Elliott, but its loyalties are divided with Sam Rockwell (the defending Supporting Actor winner from 2018), nominated in the same category (for his work in “Vice”), whom it also represents. Rockwell’s chances are further shored up (or eroded, depending on Neptune’s mood) by asteroid Rockwell Kent at 12 Gemini, squaring the Sun and Neptune. Another surprise winner could be Viggo Mortensen as Best Actor (for “Green Book”), with asteroid Vigo at 24 Aries, aligned with Uranus. Asteroid Mortensen at 8 Libra conjoins the 5 Libra Ascendant and squares the MC at 5 Cancer, making him very much tapped into the hour.

O91 roma

With asteroid Roma squared Victory Goddess Nike and Uranus, “Roma” could provide an upset win

Jupiter seems to favor other contenders as well as Elliott and Aparicio. Emma Stone, nominated as Best Supporting Actress for “The Favourite”, has both names represented exactly, with asteroid Stone at 17 Sagittarius conjoined Jupiter/Academia and squared Neptune. Asteroid Emma at 25 Capricorn pairs with Pluto and Venus, and trines a grouping of asteroid Victoria (named for the Roman goddess of victory) and Oskar at 28 and 29 Taurus, with the potential for a transformative (Pluto) Academy Award (Oskar) win (Victoria) based in popular appeal (Venus).

But Stone’s competition for the honor, Marina de Javira (“Roma”), Amy Adams (“Vice”), Regina King (“If Beale Street Could Talk”) and Rachel Weisz (her co-star in “The Favourite”) has impressive astro-credentials to submit as well. Asteroid Marina at 21 Taurus conjoins Oskar/Victoria and trines Pluto/Venus, also opposing the Moon. Amy Adams has two exact PNA matches for her name; asteroid Amy at 26 Leo is trine Jupiter, with asteroid Adams at 16 Aries squaring Saturn at 17 Capricorn, that potentially winning combination again. Regina King is another member of the “double match” club, with asteroid Regina at 2 Capricorn tapped into that 5 Libra Ascendant and 5 Cancer MC, and asteroid King at 12 Gemini squared the Sun and Neptune. (Truly, the number of exact PNA matches in this field is quite remarkable.) Asteroid Rachele represents Rachel Weisz; at 8 Taurus it conjoins Mars at 7 and Nike at 10 Taurus, perhaps denoting her as winner (Nike) of this competition (Mars).

O91 bohemian rhapsody

With asteroid Bohemia angular at the start of the show, and in aspect to both Sun and Moon, the Freddie Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” has a fair chance at taking home Oscar gold

Additional nominees for Best Actress include Glenn Close, for her work in “The Wife”; asteroid Close exactly with Pluto at 22 Capricorn well depicts her role in that film as the power behind her husband (Close also conjoins Saturn – the consort – at 17 Cap), and Venus here at 24 Capricorn could make Close the popular choice. Olivia Colman, nominated for “The Favourite”, appears as asteroid Olivia, which at 28 Capricorn is still incorporating those Pluto and Venus energies, and as asteroid Coleman (alternate spelling for Colman), exactly trine the Sun from 6 Scorpio, and opposing Mars/Nike at 7 and 10 Taurus. Melissa McCarthy (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?”) is represented by asteroid McCarthy at 15 Cancer in a Grand Trine with the Moon and Neptune, becoming a Kite pattern with McCarthy’s opposition to career-minded Saturn at 17 Capricorn.

O91 favorite

With no celestial referents, we can’t rate the odds for “The Favourite”, but two of its costars could be in the winner’s circle

Only Lady Gaga, nominated for “A Star Is Born”, has no suitable asteroid namesake in the Best Actress category. Asteroid Lada for “Lady” is a less than satisfying substitute, but for what it’s worth, it does appear at 19 Capricorn, sandwiched amongst powerhouses Saturn, Pluto and Venus. If we look to Gaga’s birth name of Stefani Germanotta for clues, we find asteroid Stefani at 15 Leo at the apex of a Yod, or Finger of Destiny, with inconjunct aspects to Saturn at 17 Capricorn and Neptune at 15 Pisces. Could this be a signal of a fated (Yod) moment in her movie (Neptune) career (Saturn)?

O91 richard e grant

Both Richard E. Grant and Melissa McCarthy are nominated for “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”; with asteroid Richard squared Pluto and Venus, inconjunct asteroids Oskar and Victoria, and opposed Uranus, and asteroid Grant opposed the Sun, actor Grant’s lock on Best Supporting Actor could be assured

The remaining male candidates are visible in the heavens as well. We’ve already noted Christian Bale and Viggo Mortensen’s chances above, vying for Best Actor. Also nominated in this category is Rami Malek, playing Queen front man Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Asteroid Malecki at 22 Aquarius is squared the Moon, in a loose T-Square with Victoria/Oskar. Bradley Cooper, nominated for “A Star Is Born”, shows as asteroid Bradley, which at 26 Pisces squares Jupiter/Academia and trines the Moon, in sextile to Victoria/Oskar. Willem Dafoe (“At Eternity’s Gate”) is represented by asteroid William at 28 Cancer, opposing Pluto/Venus, widely trine the Moon.

Best Supporting Actor nominees in addition to the Sams, Elliott and Rockwell, include Adam Driver for “BlacKkKlansman”, with asteroid Adam at 6 Leo in square to Mars/Nike and exactly inconjunct the Sun; and Richard E. Grant (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?”), another double name entrant. Asteroid Richard at 28 Libra squares Pluto/Victoria and is inconjunct Oskar/Victoria, while asteroid Grant at 7 Virgo opposes the Sun. The final nominee, Mahershala Ali, honored for his work in “Green Book”, has no celestial counterpart, the only actor in the twenty-performer field to be at this celestial disadvantage.

O91 vice

“Vice” doesn’t have an asteroid connection either, but again, several strong performances could see it reaping a golden harvest

It’s clearly a crowded, cosmically energized group, with virtually every nominee having a shot at the prize. Much will depend, on an asteroid level, on whether or not the roles that brought them acclaim are represented by PNAs in the natal chart, and the relative strength or weakness of winning indicators Nike and Victoria.

But my personal picks, with a leader and a back-up, are “Black Panther” and “A Star Is Born” for Best Picture; Yalitza Aparicio or Glenn Close for Best Actress (with a nod to Lady Gaga’s karmic potential); Christian Bale or Viggo Mortensen for Best Actor; Amy Adams or Emma Stone for Best Supporting Actress; and Sam Elliott or Richard E. Grant for Best Supporting Actor.

We’ll revisit the victors after the Awards to see just what made the winning difference.
