SCOTUS Smackdown:  Roberts Rebukes Trump

On 18 March 2025, Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court John Roberts made a rare statement on the politics of the day, when he waded into a controversy over the deportation of hundreds of undocumented Venezuelan immigrants who had been characterized by the Trump administration as violent, dangerous gang members.  The men were apprehended and removed from the country without due process, with no proof of guilt beyond the government’s say-so, then flown to a prison in El Salvador, which was paid to house them indefinitely. 

District Judge James E. Boasberg ordered a stay on their removal, which was based on a 1798 wartime powers act rarely invoked, allowing the president to arbitrarily arrest and deport known Alien Enemies.  The administration first denied the validity of the judge’s verbal order, stating it must be in written form; then disputed its validity based on the fact that, when issued, the planes were already airborne and over international waters (supposedly obviating the need to comply); and then refused to answer the judge’s questions about the incident and whether the administration had ignored his order, citing national security concerns.

Trump responded with a post on his Truth Social platform that the judge was a far-left Obama appointee, who should be impeached for his ruling.  Note that Judge Boasberg isn’t denying the powers of the president to take this action, nor the validity of the deportations, only disputing that the acts were taken without due process and evidence of guilt, as mandated by law.  Within hours, Chief Justice Roberts had released a statement which, without referencing Trump directly, was clearly in reply.  “For more than two centuries, it has been established that impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision,” Roberts said in a statement shared by the Supreme Court’s public information office.  “The normal appellate review process exists for that purpose.”

Trump’s invocation of the wartime powers legislation is suspect regardless, in a period where no war has been declared, and the deportation without due process is a violation of the Constitution in itself.  As well, the question remains of why these men were “disappeared” into an El Salvador prison and not returned to their country of origin.

That some of Trump’s decisions would be reviewed and reversed at this time is signaled by Mercury, ruling such processes, which turned retrograde at 9 Aries on the 15th, the day the flights occurred, implying a need to go back into the choices made.  By the 18th, Mercury had retreated to 8 Aries, exactly squared Donald Trump’s natal Mercury at 8 Cancer, marking his personal decisions are particularly under review.  As well, transit asteroids Donn 4689 and Johney 90308 at 13 and 15 Aries conjoined each other, also squared Trump’s Mercury and natal asteroid Donn at 7 Cancer, currently exactly conjoined by asteroid Roberts 3428, further heightening the tension between the two men.

The combination of Donn and Johney shows the potential for the president and the Chief Justice to come into personal conflict over statements (Mercury) issued by both men, as PNAs (Personal-Named Asteroids) in conjunction can signal friction and “chafing” between them.  Venus also here at 5 Aries, and also retrograde, indicates that the conflict could involve differences in values, Venus-ruled.  (Also here, asteroid Venezuela 9357 at 5 Aries, identifying the nationality of the deportees whose testament calls into question American values.)  In addition, Donn/Johney squares Trump’s natal asteroid Nemesis 128 at 16 Cancer, a point noted for opposition and resistance, a stumbling block to ambition or progress.

That Chief Justice Roberts should choose now to make his stand may be seen in the stationary status of asteroids Johnny 3252 and Justitia 269, representing both Roberts personally (Johnny) and the office he holds (Justitia, named for the Roman goddess of justice, Roberts’ job title).  Points at station are at a crossroads, a pivotal turning point requiring action, pointing to times of great importance.  At 6 Sagittarius, Johnny turns retrograde on March 31st, but already inhabits its station degree, from where it squares asteroid Themis 24 at 3 Virgo, named for the Greek goddess of justice, itself currently conjoined Trump’s natal 29 Leo Ascendant, further personalizing the judicial smackdown to The Donald.

Asteroid Justitia at 26 Cancer turned direct the day after Roberts’ station, indicating the judiciary in general as at a crossroads or crisis, with many of Trump’s acts and decisions since taking office called into question, paused, or reversed in recent days.  From 26 Cancer, Justitia conjoins Trump’s natal Saturn, ruling the law, and also associated with criticism, restriction or limitation; in this case, specifically by the judiciary (Justitia).  Trump is receiving further cosmic blowback from an exact square between transit Saturn at 22 Pisces and his natal Sun at 22 Gemini, a period of being called to account.

The Trump presidency in general is at a crisis point, with asteroid Whitehouse 4036 (cosmic shorthand for the administration) at 7 Scorpio on the fulcrum of a T-Square with asteroid Troemper 28130 (our celestial referent for Trump) at 4 Leo and Pluto at 3 Aquarius.  Pluto represents change and transformation, sometimes total, often devastating, such as Trump is trying to create in the federal government, but also rules criminality, with many of the tools Trump is using to attain his ends, judged to be extralegal, unconstitutional, or downright lawless.

So how is all this going to end, Alex? With trump defying and ignoring judicial orders, it seems to me that the coup is done and trump and his cronies now own the gov’t.

Great piece. Loved the observations about Mercury retrograde. Wow that even asteroid Venezuela makes an appearance. Am reading the stories about families seeing their innocent family members in photos of the deportees and speculation that ICE figures any Venezuelan with a tattoo must be a gang member. A total miscarriage of justice. I think the Supreme Court lost when it decided the President had immunity for official acts. They gave away their power. Not sure how they can get it back.
