Iris is most noted latterly as the goddess of the rainbow, but originally she was the messenger of the pre-Olympian gods, the Titans like Cronos and Rhea, a function later performed by Hermes and his Roman counterpart Mercury.

Kassandra was a daughter of King Priam and Queen Hecuba of Troy, an attendant in the temple of Apollo. The god became enamored of her, and attempted to woo her with the gift of prophecy, but when Kassandra still refused his advances, he spat in her mouth and cursed her to speak truly, but never be believed.
