Aster-Obit:  Scott Adams

On 13 January 2026, popular cartoonist and “Dilbert” creator Scott Adams passed away from complications of stage IV prostate cancer which had spread to the bone.  Adams drew on years of employment as an office worker for “Dilbert,” known for its satirical humor about a white-collar, micromanaged office. The successful comic led to dozens of books, an animated television series, a video game, and hundreds of themed merchandise items.

At its peak in 2013, “Dilbert” was published daily in 2,000 newspapers in 65 countries and 25 languages.  A decade later, in 2023, the comic was dropped by numerous independent newspapers as well as its distributor, after Adams published a video where he called Black Americans who disagreed with the slogan “It’s okay to be white” a “hate group” and said White Americans should “get the hell away from” them.  Adams denied his intent was racist, and regrouped by relaunching the strip as a webcomic on Locals under the new name “Dilbert Reborn.”

Born 8 June 1957 (no time available), Scott Adams’ 17 Gemini Sun is Mercury-ruled, and opposed Saturn at 10 Sagittarius, suggesting a career (Saturn) involving use of the hands (Mercury).  This is cosmically reinforced by a square from Mercury itself, at 24 Taurus, to asteroid Scott 876 at 25 Leo, conjoined Pluto at 28, indicating that drawings (Mercury) based on personal experience (Scott) could be transformative in some way (Pluto).

The Scott/Mercury square also repeats a pattern common among an individual’s PNAs (Personal-Named Asteroids), which typically appear in connection with the Sun, Moon, Ascendant or Mercury, ruling the naming function.  Asteroid Adams 1996 at 20 Aries is sextile the Sun, also conforming to the pattern.

The “Dilbert” brand spawned hundreds of themed items, including T-shirts, coffee mugs, ties, dolls, calendars, and video games; no dollar amount has been disclosed, but with asteroid Fortuna (“fortune”) conjunct asteroid Scott with Pluto (ruling the billions), squared asteroid Midas (the “golden touch”) conjoined Mercury (writing, drawing), Scott Adams had to have made a packet on merch

When “Dilbert” was first published on 16 April 1989, asteroid Scott at 4 Libra was involved in a Grand Trine with asteroid Victoria 12 (named for the Roman goddess of victory, denoting success) at 9 Aquarius and Jupiter (ruling publishing) at 6 Gemini.  With Jupiter is asteroid Cartan 17917 at 0 Gemini, closest to “cartoon,” and this pair is sesquiquadrate asteroid Adams at 17 Capricorn, linking both names to the concept of cartoon publication.

When Scott Adams passed on 13 January 2026, asteroid Scott at 7 Scorpio was squared a combination of Pluto at 3 Aquarius, named for the modern lord of death, and asteroid Rip 7711 at 10 Aquarius, which functions as a death indicator in the form of the acronym RIP, “Rest In Peace,” a common tombstone inscription.  Asteroid Adams at 25 Sagittarius rests on the fulcrum of a T-Square with Saturn, ancient lord of death, at 27 Pisces, opposed asteroid Lachesis 120 at 0 Libra, named for the mythic Greek Fate who determines the span of life.  Lachesis is at station, turning retrograde on the 24th, enhancing its effectiveness.

Health problems with his hands led to Adams adopting less tactile forms of drawing later in life; at his death, asteroid Scott squared Pluto, modern lord of death, and asteroid Rip (“RIP”)

Also at station, asteroid Osiris 1923, named for the Egyptian god of the dead, which at 26 Taurus is inconjunct Adams, and turned direct five days before his death.  Transit Osiris is also squared to the natal Scott/Pluto pairing at 25 and 28 Leo.  Asteroid Anubis 1912, named for the Egyptian deity governing funerary rites, is the third death indicator at station for the general timeframe (turning direct January 22nd).  At 9 Gemini, Anubis conjoins both natal asteroid Osiris at 3 Gemini and asteroid Atropos 273 at 14 Gemini, named for the Fate who severs the thread of life at death, as well as broadly conjunct the natal Sun at 17 Gemini.

A Lunar Eclipse September 7th at 15 Pisces opposed the natal Sun/Atropos conjunction, setting the stage for his passing.  Additional connections from the transit sky to the birth chart include transit asteroid Requiem 2254 at 16 Libra (named for the funeral mass for the dead), in trine to natal Sun/Lachesis; and transit asteroid Atropos at 12 Sagittarius, conjoined natal Saturn at 10 Sag and opposed the natal Sun/Atropos.

The death of Adams is likely the death of Dilbert as well; asteroid Adams at his passing formed a T-Square with Saturn, ancient lord of death, and asteroid Lachesis, named for the Fate who determines the span of life

In November 2025, Adams announced that due to health concerns he would no longer be drawing “Dilbert” himself, turning over that job to his art director, but would continue to write the strip as long as possible.  The future of the comic is now in doubt.
